The term plantation shutter is banded around willy nilly by our company Shutter Services and many of our competitors, but what are they and what do they mean? Plantation shutters is a term for interior window shutters which are louvered or slatted shutters which hang in a frame usually on inside windows in houses, shops and offices. They are still quite new in the UK but plantation shutters in USA have been popular for years. The term means the type of shutter it actually is. They were installed in windows on plantations throughout the world, providing much needed weather resistance where plantations were grown, and the name stuck.
The style of the plantation shutter is that of a wooden frame (or plastic, MDF etc) which is engineered to allow a shutter to be installed within, there are exceptions to this like cafe shutters which provide a window covering with three or less frame sides, however usually this is not the case. Within the frame the shutter lives and is made up of a number of slats or ‘louvers’. These are what really make the look of a plantation shutter. being slatted allows the user to adjust the light coming into the room. Hence on hot plantations the shutters were often actually closed during the day to stop the fierce heat come into the house. The shutter slats and louvers come in a variety of sizes, and usually dictated by the size of the window opening. The bigger the window often the bigger the slats, although this is not always the case.
Most rooms in a house suit this type of window covering. Shutter Services have installed shutters in lounges, dining rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, restaurants and all over homes in the UK. In fact they are ideal where other window coverings fail as they can be manufactured to be special shapes which curtains and blinds would struggle with. Using hard wood plantation shutters gives a degree of water resistance, so they are no problem in damp rooms like bathrooms and kitchens where there is a lot of moisture in the air.
These types of products are extremely durable if fitted correctly. Depending on whether they open or not as they can be hinged to allow them to fully swing open, we are dealing with stress on a hinge and we always choose the highest quality finishes for hinges. Where we attach the shutter frame together we use ties which are also wooden, wooden dowels and a secure fastening method which means our customers will enjoy their products for years to come.
